The Ownership Question
When the federal tax credit ended, a lot of Northern California homeowners quietly closed the file on solar. Here is what the headlines skipped: the path to owning your own system, outright, is still open. The only real question left is whether your home qualifies.
There is a sentence going around Northern California kitchens right now: solar isn't worth it anymore. It got louder at the end of 2025, when the federal residential tax credit expired. For a lot of people that was the end of the conversation. The incentive left, so the idea left with it.
That instinct is understandable. It is also aimed at the wrong target. The tax credit was a discount on a purchase. Its ending changed the math on one specific way of paying. It did not change the reason a homeowner wanted solar in the first place: to stop renting electricity for the rest of their life, and to eventually own the thing that makes it.
Most solar offers never let you own anything. A lease or a power-purchase agreement hands you a lower bill and keeps the hardware. Twenty years later the panels on your roof still belong to someone else. If that is the arrangement you were picturing when you decided solar was dead, then honestly, you were half right. That version deserved a second look.
The question was never "is solar dead." It was "at the end of all this, do I own it or do I not."
The setup
Here is the structure worth understanding. Instead of renting power month after month, you pay for the system once, up front. If writing one check is not how you want to do it, you finance that single payment through Travis Credit Union and pay it down like any other loan. Either way the outcome is the same on the far end: little to no ongoing electric cost, and the system becomes yours to own at Year 6.
Read that last part again, because it is the whole point. Not a lower bill in exchange for a twenty-year tenancy. Ownership, on a defined timeline, with the electricity you generate working for the house you already live in.
The fine print, in plain English
When homeowners hear "there's a financing option," a short list of worries shows up on cue. Credit. Liens. What happens if I move. Whether this is somehow more expensive than just paying cash. Fair concerns, so here they are, on the table.
None of that requires you to gamble your credit score just to get an answer. Eligibility here is about your home and your utility, not a hard pull on your file.
Priced below cash, no lien, no FICO gate, and it's yours at Year 6. That is a purchase wearing a payment plan, not a rental.
Who does what
A word on how the work gets done, because it matters and it is where a lot of solar sales go vague. North Valley Solar Power designs and manages your project. We are your single point of contact from the first question to the day the system is running. The physical installation is carried out by a licensed installation partner. You get the coordination of one team and the craftsmanship of the right specialists, without being handed off and forgotten.
That is the entire pitch, and it is deliberately unglamorous: you were told the door closed. For the ownership path, it didn't. The plan still exists, it is built to end with you owning the system, and finding out whether your roof and your bill qualify takes about a minute.
So the only thing left is to check. Not to buy anything today. Just to see where your home lands.
The 1-Minute Eligibility Check
Four quick questions about your home. No credit check, no obligation, no salesperson until you ask for one.
Do you own your home?
Is PG&E your electric utility?
Roughly what is your average monthly electric bill? A ballpark is fine. This helps size the plan, nothing more.
